It’s a phrase or “word” we’ve all heard, but what causes TMJ? What is TMJ? The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of a small disc and a ball and socket. The disc acts as a cushion as the jawbone slides and rotates within the temporal bone of the skull in front of each ear. It’s what allows your mouth to fully open and close; and so much more. The TMJ and the muscles of this area of the face affect chewing, bite (occlusion) and jaw movement.
What are TMJ symptoms?
TMD (temporomandibular disorders) occurs when this joint is not functioning properly. A common cause of TMJ disorder is a bite problem displacing the lower jaw out of its sockets. Other causes of TMD are head or face injuries, teeth clenching, and wear and tear on teeth from teeth grinding or aging. In all cases, TMD can be very painful.
What can I do for TMJ pain? How do I obtain TMJ pain relief?
We know, all this medical terminology can cause brain pain! Know there is a simple solution. A properly made custom TMJ night guard helps treat TMJ, relax muscles, unload the pressure on the joint itself, and stop wear and pressure on the teeth. Early intervention and treatment for TMJ can prevent permanent damage to joint, muscles and teeth. If symptoms persist, reconstructive dentistry or comprehensive orthodontics may be necessary, but only in a small number of cases.
