Why Are My Teeth Yellow?

Teeth can become yellower for a number of reasons but it all stems from your enamel and how you treat it. A tooth is made up of 4 tissues-enamel, which is the strong white covering that protects the tooth, dentin, which supports the enamel and is a hard yellow material that carries nerves, pulp, which is at the center of the tooth and contains blood and lymph vessels, and cementum, which covers the root of the tooth. The enamel and dentin play the biggest roles in teeth coloration. Drinks like coffee and red wine will directly stain the enamel. Age as well as acidic drinks will actually weaken the enamel, revealing the yellow dentin underneath.

What Can I Do To Whiten My Smile?

Lots of people turn to non-effective  and sometimes even risky solutions to brightening their smile. At Weisbard Dental, we want to show you all of the safest, most effective solutions to a whiter smile.

Here are a few ways to get your whitest teeth ever:

  • Brush at least twice daily with whitening toothpaste that contains fluoride. We recommend Two Step Crest Pro Health HD. Step 1 is a purifying cleanser that helps strip away plaque, and step 2 is a perfecting gel that polishes and whitens teeth

  • Use a powerful, electric toothbrush for a more effective clean. We recommend that our patients use Oral B Genius. This electric toothbrush has a pressure sensor that alerts you if you’re brushing too hard, a rounded brush head for hard to reach places, and position detection technology so that you never miss a spot.

  • Get a teeth whitening kit – we offer a reduced cost for our patients and we will make custom bleach trays, which is the safest and best option. Patients can whiten their teeth from the convenience of their own homes while also getting the effectiveness of a professional whitening.
  • Eat foods like apples, celery, pears and carrots which generates saliva in your mouth to wash away food debris.
  • Avoid smoking, which stains your teeth
  • Rinse your mouth immediately after partaking in staining foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, dark fruit juices, wine, blueberries, blackberries, and beets.
  • Chew Confadent Gum. This gum is a healthy, convenient oral care product that whitens teeth, reduces surface plaque, helps protect gums, helps fight harmful cavity-causing bacteria, and freshens breath!

  • Get regular dental checkups.
  • Floss regularly.
  • For immediate results try our in-office teeth-whitening system, Zoom. (These will usually change up to six shades in one visit.) Zoom is a system in which we will apply hydrogen peroxide gel to the teeth and then use an overhead lamp to deliver light to the area. The UV light breaks down the activated gel and allows oxygen to enter the enamel and dentin, bleaching the colored substances, while leaving the structure of the teeth in tact.

Don’t know if your teeth could be whiter? Talk to our dental assistant to get an assessment on your teeth. We typically find that most average adults could benefit from whitening their teeth.
