In the past few weeks, we have covered sensitive teeth in-depth on this blog, explaining why your teeth are sensitive and susceptible to irritation and pain, various methods and strategies you can employ to ease or lessen the severity of the sensitivity, and what your doctor and other dental professionals can do to apply a long-term or even permanent fix.
At Home Treatments
One thing that both professional and at-home treatments both do is treat the underlying cause of the sensitivity. Through a variety of methods, they cover or plug the cluster of small tubes that make up the dentin or inner part of the tooth, preventing the nerves inside the tooth from being further exposed to liquids and air. Applying treatments at home can be so effective that for mild cases of tooth sensitivity professional treatments may not be necessary, so choosing the right products to treat your sensitive teeth is very important.
Choosing The Right Toothbrush
The first product to consider is your toothbrush. Whether you are using a traditional or electric toothbrush, it is important to choose a brush or brush head with soft bristles, and preferably one with sections of bristles in various lengths. The goal is to use a brush or brush head that is gentle on your teeth and gums while also being versatile and effective enough to clean all of the visible surfaces of your teeth.
Choosing The Right Toothpaste
You may be curious to know the differences between “regular” types of toothpaste and toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth. Toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth usually contain at least one of two chemical compounds: potassium nitrate or strontium chloride. Potassium nitrate has been used in desensitizing toothpastes since the 1980s, while strontium chloride became widely available around the turn of the century. Both types of toothpaste require a number of weeks to reach their maximum level of effectiveness.
